Research and Critical Thinking for better Intervention Design
We support organisations to design interventions that are evidence-based, context-sensitive, and effective in politically complex environments.about us
-
We lead research, evaluation, and evidence synthesis to identify what shapes outcomes in complex and politically sensitive contexts. Each assignment is approached as a process of structured inquiry, where assumptions are made explicit and tested against evidence, and competing explanations are actively explored. This allows for a more precise understanding of context, constraints, and the factors that influence whether interventions succeed or fail. Our work draws on a wide range of methodologies, including quasi-experimental and theory-based approaches, realist evaluation, and complexity-oriented methods such as outcome harvesting. These are complemented by state-of-the-art data science techniques, including social network analysis and natural language processing, where appropriate. All work is grounded in do-no-harm principles and strong context sensitivity, and carried out in close collaboration with national research teams.

Our work is grounded in a commitment to intellectual rigour and independence. This includes being explicit about assumptions, transparent about limitations, and willing to challenge prevailing narratives where evidence does not support them. Context sensitivity and do-no-harm principles underpin all our engagement.

The Conflict Research and Evidence Lab was launched in June 2023. Since then, we have led over three dozen projects across more than 50 countries, spanning research, evaluation, and evidence synthesis in governance, peacebuilding, humanitarian assistance, and security sector reform. Our team brings decades of experience living and working in fragile and conflict-affected contexts.
